Pyrenean Traverse – 6 days- June 22nd- 29th, 2019.

We organise transfers from Biarritz Airport ( 30mins) and Toulouse ( 2hrs), to our Biarritz hotel  to leave more travel options.  Our staff will assist you to assemble your bikes before dinner when we will do the briefing for the day one and what to expect in the week ahead. The basque coast is a stunning area and it is worth arriving early to soak up the basque culture and admire the large surf beaches.

Day 1: Hendaye to Lurbe St Christau (160km with 2200m of ascent).

Traditionally we have a quick lunge into the Atlantic before we depart at 09.00am following the coast before turning east on some great tarmac and quiet roads. The terrain is rolling and relatively easy we pass through the the Basque countryside with its pretty Bearnaise farmhouses, old stone walls and cute villages . The climbs are short with the Col De St Ignace at 169m, and the Col De Pinodieta at 176m, before stopping at St Jean Pied de Port for lunch stop. The afternoon brings the Col D’ Osquich at 500m and the first proper climb of the trip, the Marie Blanc at 1035m before our overnight at Lurbe st Christau.

Day 2: Lurbe St Christau to Aste -140km with 3530km climbing.

Day 2 is large, feauturing the famous Tour climbs of the Pyrenees, and features stunning Alpine scenary.  There is a gentle run into our first objective, the awesome Col D’Aubisque at 1709m. There is a cafe on the top which provides a perfect place for a deserved rest, before following a high traverse to the Col de Soulor at 1464m and a fast descent to Argeles-Gazost for lunch. We then follow the main road up the gorge to Luz-St Sauveur for the Western approach to the mighty Tourmalet , steeped in Tour history. We stop briefly at the top for a coffee before the fast descent through La Mongie to St Marie de Campan, and our hotel in Aste.

Day 3: Aste to Massat -170km with 3110m ascent.

On day 3 we climb the picturesque Col d’Aspin at 1489m and the Col de Peyresourde at 1569m, with a quick coffee stop at the top and huge fast decent to the spa town of Luchon.  The Col Des Ares (797m)and the Col De Buret (602m) are delightful, especially when compared to the 14% inclines of approaching the Col de Portet D’Aspet (1069m). However, once you have that in the bag, the next 70km involves a gentle down and gentle ascent to the small town of Massat.

Day 4: Massat to Prades (163km with 3900m ascent)

Our biggest day. We start with the  Col de Port (1249m) is first up and is a gradual and beautiful climb, followed by a fast descent to Tarascon, before we snake up a long easy climb to the Plateau De Bielle, avoiding the busy road to Ax-les-Thermes . We then descend briefly to join the infamous climb up to the might Tour climb of The Port De Pailheres at 2001m. The views are breathtaking and at last we can rejoice in crossing the Atlantic – Med watershed. A stunning switchback decent long, narrow descent takes gives us just about enough time to recover before the understated Col des Moulis (1099m) and the Col du Garavel (1262m).  Next up is the Col du Jau (1506m) before the final descent which takes us nearly all the way to our hotel. Prades has a reassuringly Mediterranean feel about it, with lots of courtyard cafe’s and clay tiled roofs.

Day 5: Prades to Collioure (90km with 620m ascent)

We are finished with the big ascents as head down to the coast, via a few rollers. We ride through Thuir and hit the Mediterranean at Argeles-Sur-Mer. From here we undulate (some fairly large undulations!) along the coast road through to our final destination at the medieval town of Collioure.

Clients in need of an early return can be transfered to Perpignan for a flight back to Stanstead or under their own steam to Girona or Carcassonne.

Day 6: Transfer to Carcassonne or Toulouse Airport

We depart Collioure at 09.00 and transfer back to either Carcassonne or Perpignan Airport (depending which trip you are on) for the flights back to London Stansted. For those of you on the Toulouse option, we will continue to Toulouse Airport for midday.
