Chamonix to Nice, Haute Alpe Tour – 4 days
June 14th-17th, and September 6-9th:
A fantastic 4 day tour through the Alps from the High Savoie, traversing the Tarentaise Mountains and into the Southern Alpes amongst stunning alpine peaks, finishing in the azure bay of Nice on the Mediterranean. This 4 day ride will take us over some of the most famous “Tour” climbs, staying in quality hand picked accommodation.
We will meet you at Geneva airport Thursday evening with your bike boxes and you will be transferred to our comfortable hotel in Chamonix for a good nights sleep. Transfer is approximately 70 minutes.
Chamonix Valley to St Foy. 131km.
We have any easy start rolling down the Chamonix valley to St Gervais and our first short 9km climb to the ski resort of Megeve. We then carry along the valley to Notre Dame De Bellecombe and our first proper climb the 16km Col De Saisies at 1,633m. After lunch we climb the massive Cormet De Roseland at 1968m, descending to Bourg St Maurice and a relatively straight forward climb to St Foy and a welcome shower and meal at our hotel.
St Foy to Susa. 108km.
Stage 2 starts through the ski resort of Val D’Isere and then into our ascent of the mighty Col d’Iseran which at 2,770m, is our second highest climb of the tour. The col is commonly snow covered, even quite late in the season and is one of the Tours great climbs. We lunch high on the mountain in stunning scenery before our final climb up the Col De Mont Cenis at 2,083m on the French-Italian border and our final descent to through a stunning gorge to our stopover in the pretty medieval town of Susa in Italy..
Susa to Jausiers . 145km
We have a gentle start to our biggest day, down the Susa valley on easy roads to our first climb to Montgenevre at 1854m, back on the Italian/French border. We descend on the main col road towards Frances highest city, Briancon, with its pretty castellated centre, before starting into one of the great and infamous climbs of the Tour de France, the 20km Col d’Izoard . This Cat 0 winds up through pretty pine forests to the open and bleak summit slopes of the Casse Déserte and the famous Fausto Coppi monument on the summit. Weather permitting we will lunch here before starting the vast sweeping descent down one of the great gorges of The Alpes Maritime, racing alongside a white water river under steep limestone cliffs and a final water/food stop before our last challenge, the climb up to the Col De Var where we collect for a final coffee before the rapid descent to our luxury spa hotel in the pretty town of Jausiers in the valley below.
Jausiers to Nice- 132km.
We start the day with possibly the most beautiful climb of the southern Alpes, and the highest in Europe, The Col De La Bonette, at 2812m. Featured rarely in ‘The Tour’ due to its southern routing, it twists and turns up a grassy warm valley, fringed by small waterfalls, before meandering through Alpine pasture to a final low gradient run along a rocky ridge to a saddle by the summit and our first ‘Nice’ sign. From here we have an amazing 70km descent through small ski resorts and several large river valleys to a final flat rollout of 30kms, some on cycleway, to the beach and our hotel
We pack our bags and have a late lunch/on the sea front overlooking the bay, before heading to the airport, for those not staying an extra night.
